  2. Earth's crust, so named from the Mohorovicic
  3. discontinuity that marks the transition from
  4. crust to mantle. Initial tests were made in
  5. the Pacific in 1961, but the project was
  6. subsequently abandoned. The cores that were
  7. brought up illuminated the geological history
  8. of the Earth and aided the development of
  9. geophysics.
